If you’re a fan of collecting prospects then you are more than ready to cash in on all of those prospects that were hunted down in 2011.  That’s the thing; you have to sit on some of those players for a few years before they come to fruition on the field, and on the secondary market.

Our friend Chuck Vanderbilt, from Collectin’ Tex, reminds us which players are on the rise that we may have to dig up from previous sets and get them ready to showcase.

The 2013 baseball season is here and many collectors have started to pick out their top prospect cards. In doing so, it’s important to note which prospects that are poised to make an impact at the Major League level this year. It’s smart to have your top prospects set aside early instead of waiting for when the spotlight hits. You don’t want to find yourself having to dig while the secondary market becomes flooded.Prospect card values can often fluctuate with the swing of the bat or an appearance on the mound. Of course, keep in mind those values fluctuate both ways. Consider card values of J.D. Martinez during his hot start for the Astros in the 2012 season. Values of his prospect autographs tripled during his tear, only to plummet when the long season of averages got the better of him. Like the stock market, you want sell high and buy low while keeping a keen eye on the ceilings and floors. Easier said than done. Right?

With that said, here three top prospects to keep an eye on considering that their early performances in the 2013 season could cause sharp changes in values.

Trevor Bauer
Now with the Cleveland Indians, Trevor Bauer will get a fresh start in 2013. For whatever reason, Bauer and the Diamondbacks had a strained relationship that had to play into his performance. It will be interesting to see how the new surroundings will effect Bauer on the mound.
While the initial spike in Bauer’s card value has come and gone, the pitcher’s quirky character and ability to be dominate on the mound could cause another rise in value.
Shelby Miller
When news of Chris Carpenter’s injury broke, a competition between Shelby Miller and Joe Kelly for the 5th spot in the Cardinals starting rotation began. Miller, a Houston native, won the final spot in the rotation with a solid spring.
While Miller doesn’t possess a blazing  100 mph fastball like Aroldis Chapman or teammate Trevor Rosenthal, collectors can still find value in Miller who projects to be a front of the rotation starter. His “stuff” puts him at an advantage against hitters early coming out of spring training considering some players are still finding their timing.

Jurickson Profar

For many, Profar is the top prospect in all of baseball. Even though the 20 year old infielder didn’t tear the cover off the ball during spring training, Profar is starting the season with the Texas Rangers. Look for Profar to fill in for Elvis Andrus and Ian Kinsler. Speaking of Elvis Andrus, the shortstop just inked an extension with the Rangers. What this means for Profar is unclear, but the trade winds are currently blowing strong.

If Profar stays, it’s hard to imagine that he’ll get the playing time needed to make a big impact in 2013. So without a trade or injury to a Rangers middle infielder, collectors may want  to continue holding on to Profar.
