Baseball and my dad

I’ve decided to take my talents to Corpus Christi, Tx this weekend.  I’ve decided that I’m going to go on the journey by myself, which normally isn’t a big deal, but I wanted my dad to go with me.

You see, my father and I have been going to baseball games together since I was a little kid.  He introduced me to the sport, got be involved in little league and took me to my first Astros game at the Astrodome in the late 80’s.  He’s not as involved with it as I am nowadays, but anytime I’m in Houston we go to the games together.

I learned I was having the entire weekend off and decided I wanted to go down there to check out the Astros’ Double-A affiliate Hooks play.  A little prospecting if you will and maybe some fun in the sun.  I asked him if he was interested and he just has way too much work going on.

Normally that wouldn’t be that big of a deal except for what happened last night at Arlington stadium.

Shannon Stone took his son to go watch a Rangers game together as they have multiple time and he wanted for his son to get a ball.  Early in the game a foul ball bounced back into left field where Josh Hamilton grabbed in and threw it into the stands as seen through all ballparks.

Unfortunately and tragically, Shannon leaned over the railing to grab the ball Hamilton toss and fell 20-feet to the concrete below later dying at the hospital.  This tragic accident was to no one’s fault, but it doesn’t change the fact that his son had to see him fall and was basically helpless.

Now I won’t speculate as to how Josh Hamilton is feeling, or anyone from the Rangers’ organization, but you can’t help but think about all of the father/son moments we all had growing up.  How his son and wife he leaves behind will feel.

I can’t imagine losing my father in that or any other way and knowing all the baseball memories that he has given me growing up till now.  All of the memories I will have to maybe share the experience of baseball with my own daughter.

It’s a sad story to relive over and over again.

Baseball is just a game, but it creates memories that last in our lives forever.  Be thankful for what you have and cherish all of the moments that you can share with those who you love.
