Pack Preview: 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter

UPDATE: FULL CHECKLIST NOW AVAILABLE

When it comes to throwback sets, I don’t think anyone does it better than Topps does.  Sure- Panini’s Golden Age is a great set, but with Allen & Ginter sets the collector always wins.

What makes A&G great is that people love it or hate it.  Baseball care collector purists don’t enjoy all of the non-sport inclusions, and all of the additional extras, but for others- that’s what makes this set stand apart.  It’s an amazing set to build, and with 2014 it doesn’t look like the tried and true formula has changed, and that’s ok by me.

WHAT’S IN THE BOX:

Each box of Ginter will contain three from the following: Autographs, Relics, Cut Signatures, Orginals or a Rip Card (which will fall about 1 per case). But with Ginter, it’s not always about the ‘hits’.  The set is comprised of 350 cards with the last 50 being short-prints.  These become great secondary market value if you’re selling, or a fun challenge if you’re building.  I can’t say it enough though– if you’re wanted to try your hand at set building, I think this product is the most fun.

Mini cards are another great addition to Ginter that other sets include, but only seem to fit seamlessly in this product.  The usual variations are included: A&G back, black border, no-number, Flag back, wood, metal and cloth parallels, and the mini cards are also featured in certain framed autographs which are really spectacular.

The autograph cards can be pretty tough in this set, but that makes them more fun to pull.  There are going to be book cards, framed mini autos and special red ink autographs too.  From preliminary info, the book cards look like they will contain stickers, but that may expand the autograph checklist just a bit.  The autographs in Ginter are typically on-card, so it shouldn’t hurt the checklist too bad.

WHAT I THINK:

Trying to be subjective with a product I really enjoy is indeed tough.  I don’t see many flaws with Ginter with the exception of maybe one too many random mini insert set.  Last time I broke a case of this product I had a whole section of my table devoted to the non-sport mini cards.  It can be a touch overwhelming.  Additionally, with Ginter you can expect a Ginter Code goose-chase that had miserable results in 2013, but the preliminary details were not on the product info.

Rip Cards, Double Rip cards and special mini inclusions will definitely add value to this produc and I highly recommend it.  I will be breaking down this product into smaller pieces to get a true feel for what this product offers in the coming days, so for now- check out the gallery above and let us know what you think about Ginter in the comments below!
