While the NFLPA Rookie Premiere was canceled because of COVID-19, Panini America was still able to unveil the first eight rookie premier players. Though the event is no longer happening, Panini America will be finding other ways to promote the players, as the players themselves are some of the more marketable aspects of the upcoming football sets that Panini has the exclusive license for
According to a press release from Panini America, “[Panini America] primarily drives player selection by identifying the most promising young prospects based on position, college performance, draft status and projected overall demand and marketability. All these factors impact a rookie’s trading card value, even before they have played a single down in an NFL game. The rookie cards, autographs, and memorabilia from this year’s 42 rookies will be heavily featured throughout Panini America’s complete 2020 NFL trading card portfolio”.

The release goes on to say, “Beginning today and in conjunction with the NFLPA, Panini will unveil the rookies by position each day across its social platforms, beginning with today’s announcement of the Quarterbacks, and followed by Running Backs on Tuesday, Wide Receivers on Wednesday, and Tight Ends and Defense on Thursday. On Friday, the NFLPA and Panini will release the complete and official 42-player 2020 NFLPA Rookie Premiere roster and team image. Media and fans can follow Panini on Twitter and Instagram (@paniniamerica) and the NFLPA on Twitter and Instagram (@nflpa) along with the hashtags: #RatedRookie and #NFLPARookiePremiere“.
The event, goes back to 1994, and it serves as a way for marketers to match professional athletes with prospective business partners. It also serves as a great opportunity for photos which can then be used in future card products as well.
