TOPPS® PLEDGES $100 FOR EVERY STRIKEOUT PITCHED BY CLAYTON KERSHAW IN 2014

Anytime you hear about one of your favorite players (or nemesis) going the extra mile you can’t help but slow clap during the announcement.  Such is the case with Topps cards, andtwo-time Cy-Young award winner, Clayton Kershaw.

Topps will donate $100 for every strikeout claimed by Kershaw during the 2014 season for his charity, Kershaw’s Challenge. The foundation was founded by Clayton and his wife, Ellen, and is intended to give back to children in need in Los Angeles, Dallas and Zumbia

“Topps is an iconic American brand that has brought joy to baseball fans for generations,” Clayton said. “Ellen and I are so pleased that we have a partnership that helps support Kershaw’s Challenge and delivers exciting product to the fans.”

The partnership for Kershaw’s foundation is just part of a larger partnership deal with Topps.  The New York trading card company has also struck a deal with Kershaw to be the exclusive holder of his signature. He will also be featured on the cover of 2014 Topps Baseball Series two.

“We are thrilled to be able to partner with Clayton Kershaw.  We continue to collaborate with the premier players in our goal to getting fans closer to the game,” said Clay Luraschi, VP Product Development at Topps. “We are equally excited to support Kershaw’s Challenge throughout the 2014 season.”

So besides the donation, which is fantastic, this marks another exclusive in the trading card world making the companies continue to separate from each other.  Are exclusives are good for the hobby? Speak your mind in the comments below.
