Boxing cards were first introduced at the beginning of the 20th century and the sport now has one of the largest fan bases on the IMG_0002planet.  Even with the popularity of mixed-martial arts, the history of boxing is rich and the cards that were created have stood through the test of time.

One of the most popular boxing sets ever created is the Churchman’s Cigarettes: ‘Boxing Personalities’ set. Issued in 1938, this set is one of the favorite among collectors because of the checklist that includes over 16 boxing Hall of Famers. It includes names like, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, and Jack Johnson.

Collector MJ Schaffer loves football, but in 2008 he decided he wanted to put together a vintage set of cards that would have solid value after being graded.  He decided to go with BVG for grading because there were no other graded sets with them at the time and still plans to upgrade individual cards to obtain the highest condition ratings that he can.  Schaffer says, “If you don’t like the condition of the cards resell it and get your money back. I haven’t lost any money buying and reselling this set.” Good to know when you spend the time perfecting and upgrading the condition.

Schaffer runs MJ Schaffer Sports Cards and Memorabilia and more details about his collection can be found on his website.
